Basement Staircase Renovation in Ontario: Transform Your Lower Level Access
Basement staircases are often the most neglected and functional-only staircase in Ontario homes — steep, dark, narrow, and designed purely to access storage or a finished basement as an afterthought. As more Ontario homeowners invest in finishing or renovating their basements into genuine living space — home offices, rec rooms, gyms, and secondary suites — the basement staircase becomes an important architectural element that deserves proper attention. At C.O.R.S Staircases in Barrie, we design and build basement staircase renovations throughout Simcoe County and the GTA.
The Problems with Original Basement Staircases
Most Ontario homes built between 1970 and 2005 have basement staircases with these characteristics:
- Steep rise: Basement stairs are often designed at the maximum allowable rise — sometimes exceeding current OBC limits in older homes — making them uncomfortable and physically demanding for adults
- Narrow width: Often 760–860mm wide — the minimum functional width, not comfortable for regular daily use or furniture movement
- Closed walls on both sides: Boxing in the staircase on both sides creates a dark, narrow tube that feels distinctly separate from the main floor’s aesthetic
- Softwood construction: Pine or OSB stair treads that creak, flex, and fail to match the hardwood floor finishes in renovated basements
Basement Staircase Renovation Options
- Open one or both sides: Removing the drywall boxing on one side of the staircase — or both sides — dramatically changes the feel. Where the structure allows, opening the staircase to the main floor makes both spaces feel larger and more connected
- Convert to open-riser: Remove the solid risers and allow the space between treads to be open — this lets light pass through and makes the staircase less visually heavy in a finished basement context
- Floating mono-stringer conversion: For the most dramatic transformation, replace the entire staircase with a floating mono-stringer design. This is less common for basement staircases due to cost, but increasingly popular in high-end basement renovations
- Hardwood tread replacement: Replace pine or carpet treads with white oak, walnut, or maple to match the main floor and renovated basement aesthetic
- Railing modernization: Replace dated balusters with glass panel or cable railing — even on a partially renovated basement staircase, a glass panel railing transforms the visual character
OBC Considerations for Basement Staircase Renovation
Renovating an existing basement staircase in Ontario may trigger OBC compliance requirements that bring the staircase up to current standards:
- Rise and run: Maximum 200mm rise, minimum 210mm run for residential stairs
- Minimum width: 860mm clear
- Headroom: Minimum 1,950mm (approximately 6.5 feet) measured vertically from tread nosing to the obstruction above
- Guardrail height: Minimum 900mm on open sides
Our P.Eng team confirms all dimensions during the site assessment and flags any compliance issues before design begins.
