The five most-requested custom staircase designs in Ontario homes in 2026 — with real pricing and what OBC requires for each. Use this to shortlist your design before calling a contractor.
Ontario homeowners can find registered staircase contractors through the Home Construction Regulatory Authority (HCRA) — C.O.R.S Designs is a fully compliant Ontario staircase company.
1. White Oak Treads + Black Mono-Stringer + Glass Railing
The most popular custom staircase design in Ontario right now. A single matte black steel beam runs centrally beneath white oak treads. Frameless glass panels on post-and-channel hardware create the guardrail. The treads appear to float.
Why it works: The contrast of warm white oak grain against matte black steel reads well in both modern farmhouse and contemporary interiors. Glass keeps the visual open.
Cost: $15,000–$21,000 installed. Straight configuration, 13 steps, 3.5–4.0m of glass railing.
OBC note: P.Eng engineering stamp required for mono-stringer permit. 100mm infill gap rule applies to glass panel spacing.
2. White Oak Treads + Double Steel Stringer + Steel Balusters
Two steel beams run along the outer tread edges. Open riser. Powder-coated steel balusters at maximum 95mm spacing. No glass. Cleaner and more budget-friendly than option 1, with a similar open, modern aesthetic.
Cost: $11,000–$14,500 installed.
OBC note: No P.Eng required (standard structural calculation). 100mm sphere rule applies to baluster spacing — 95mm typical centre-to-centre spacing satisfies this.
3. Walnut Treads + Mono-Stringer + Cable Railing
Rich dark walnut treads (natural-finished, no stain needed) on a matte black mono-stringer. Stainless steel cable railing on steel posts — more open than glass, more economical, with an industrial-modern look.
Cost: $16,000–$22,000 installed. Walnut adds $3,000–$5,000 over white oak. Cable railing is $75–$120/lf vs $120–$160/lf for glass.
OBC note: Cable spacing must satisfy the 100mm sphere rule. Post spacing and cable tension must be verified at installation.
4. Traditional Closed-Riser + Black Iron Balusters
The Ontario housing renovation standard. Solid white or red oak treads and painted risers on a wood box stringer. Existing railing replaced with matte black square iron balusters and a new stained oak handrail. The most common staircase renovation in Ontario homes built between 1990 and 2010.
Cost: $8,000–$13,000 full replacement. Railing replacement only (keep existing treads): $3,500–$7,500.
OBC note: Railing replacement requires a building permit. Maximum 95mm baluster spacing. Handrail 865–965mm height.
5. L-Shaped Floating with Landing
A mono-stringer design with a landing partway up — the staircase turns 90 degrees. More complex to engineer and fabricate than a straight flight, but allows the staircase to fit in spaces where a straight run isn’t geometrically possible. Very popular in new builds with open-concept main floors.
Cost: $18,000–$26,000 installed. The landing adds fabrication and material cost vs a straight flight.
OBC note: Landing must be minimum 860mm × 860mm. Headroom clearance (1,950mm) must be maintained at every point. P.Eng required.
