Adding LED to an Existing Staircase

Retrofit LED puck installation on an existing staircase requires routing a low-voltage cable — possible on most staircase configurations but requires assessment. C.O.R.S evaluates retrofit feasibility during your consultation at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions — LED Staircase Lighting Installation Ontario

Do I need a licensed electrician for LED staircase lighting?
The low-voltage LED system itself (driver to fixtures) falls under Class 2 wiring — this does not require a licensed electrician in Ontario. However, the connection from your home’s circuit to the LED driver (transformer) IS a licensed electrician’s work — this is typically a 45–60 minute task. C.O.R.S coordinates the electrician’s schedule with installation day at no extra charge.

Can I control the staircase lights from multiple locations?
Yes. A 3-way dimmer switch configuration allows control from both the top and bottom of the staircase. Smart home integration (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart) adds app and voice control from any location. C.O.R.S installs the LED driver and fixture wiring — your electrician connects the driver to the circuit and installs the switch, or your smart home integrator adds the Lutron/Leviton device.

What happens if one tread light fails?
Individual LED pucks and strip sections are replaceable independently. C.O.R.S designs the wiring with individual fixture access — in most mono-stringer installations, each tread light can be accessed through the stringer access point or through the tread face without removing the tread. C.O.R.S carries spare fixtures for 2 years post-installation.

Is there a dimmable option that doesn’t flicker?
Yes. C.O.R.S specifies Lutron-compatible LED drivers on all installations. The combination of a trailing-edge LED driver and a Lutron leading-edge dimmer eliminates the flickering common with cheaper driver/dimmer combinations. We test each installation for flicker-free dimming across the full range before sign-off.

Can I add motion sensing so the lights come on automatically at night?
Yes. A PIR motion sensor mounted at the top and bottom of the staircase activates the LED system when occupants approach — and deactivates after a set timeout (typically 2 minutes). This is an add-on of $150–$300 depending on sensor type and configuration. Motion sensing eliminates the need to remember to turn lights on or off — particularly valued in homes with elderly residents or young children.
